Emergency and critical care (ECC) focuses on the needs of severely ill or injured animals. The variety of cases seen within an ECC setting is what some nurses find most exciting; from post-operative care of a septic peritonitis patient, management and monitoring of a patient in respiratory distress, a patient undergoing mechanical ventilation or caring for a patient with polytrauma following a road traffic accident. However, being the nurse caring for these critical patients holds much responsibility and a huge level of knowledge is required to appropriately manage such a vast range of management techniques and disease states.
This learning series with Jessica Herley covers the fundamentals of ECC nursing so that you can approach these cases with confidence. Case-based discussions are used throughout to solidify knowledge and understanding, in order to provide effective nursing care to these critical patients.
