Practical Surgical Refresher (3 day course)

This hands-on 3 day surgical course is ideal for vets returning to clinical work, moving into a more surgical role, or simply looking to rebuild confidence and competence in common procedures.

An opportunity to learn, refresh and ask questions and then practise techniques, starting with the basics of preparing for surgery, placing ligatures, and practising suturing; to get back up to speed on procedures that are commonly encountered in general practice.

Included in the course is 12 months’ access to our full Central CPD On-Demand library, along with a tailored training programme focused on the most important topics for refreshers. This flexible online resource provides an in-depth update across key areas, with expert-led videos designed to build confidence and support the management of a wide range of cases.

Topics to be covered include:

• Preparing for surgery, gowning, gloving, skin preparation and equipment
• Suturing, ligatures and suture materials
• Management of traumatic and surgical wounds, including the use of surgical drains
• Neutering in dogs and cats, when and why to neuter as well as surgery and the caesarean section
• Exploratory celiotomy - enterotomy, enterectomy, splenectomy and gastric surgery, taking biopsies and understanding what is normal
• Placement of feeding tubes in dogs and cats
• Urinary tract surgery – cystotomy and cystotomy tubes
• Aural hematomas and decision making on otitis externa
• Oncologic surgery - planning and removal of simple masses from first presentation through diagnosis to surgery
