  • Description

Renal and lower urinary disorders are some of the most common conditions we see in cats. Whether managing a hospitalised patient with chronic kidney disease or triaging and stabilising a blocked bladder, the nursing care these patients need is extensive and often challenging but incredibly rewarding.

We’ll cover the common renal diseases seen in cats, including chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, and the vital role nurses play in supporting these patients in hospital and at home.

We’ll also discuss lower urinary disorders and the management of obstructed patients, from triage and emergency stabilisation to post-unblocking care and long-term support at home.

Finally, we’ll explore practical skills including feeding tube placement and management, urinary catheter care, vascular access and sampling, and setting up renal nursing clinics.

    Topics to be covered include:

    • Chronic kidney disease
    • Acute kidney injury
    • Emergency treatment and stabilisation for urethral obstruction.
    • Post treatment nursing care and long-term management
