Description
Local anaesthesia is a key component of effective multimodal analgesia, improving patient comfort while reducing reliance on systemic analgesic drugs. This practical one-day course is designed to give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to select, implement and perform regional anaesthetic techniques in small animal practice.
You will have access to pre-course online learning designed to prepare and support your learning experience, allowing the in-person day to focus primarily on developing hands-on practical experience and clinical application.
During the course, you will refine existing skills and learn new techniques for performing nerve blocks used in orthopaedic, soft tissue and dental procedures. We will review the pharmacology of local anaesthetics, appropriate dosing, and safety considerations, as well as explore the role of nerve stimulation and ultrasound guidance in improving accuracy and outcomes.
Through case-based discussions, you will also develop practical strategies for integrating these techniques into confident perioperative pain management in clinical practice.
Topics covered include:
- Benefits of the use of local anaesthetic techniques within multimodal analgesia
- Pharmacology, dosing calculations and safety considerations of local anaesthetic drugs
- Peripheral nerve blocks for orthopaedic, soft tissue and dental procedures
- Techniques for dental, retrobulbar and auricular nerve blocks
- IVRA, digital, intercostal and ring blocks
- Landmark-guided brachial plexus, femoral and sciatic blocks
- Lumbosacral epidural technique, indications, precautions and contraindication
- Wound catheters and adjunct local anaesthetic techniques
- Case-based development of an analgesic plan using local anaesthetic techniques
Please note: This is a cadaver-based course
