  • Description

Are you a competent general practitioner looking to expand your surgical prowess and dive into the intricacies of spinal surgery?

This practical course will offer specialised training in the surgical management of canine spinal disease, focusing on intervertebral disc disease. Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on wet lab sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of both medical management and surgical techniques, alongside decision-making processes.

Practical sessions on hemilaminectomy and ventral slot techniques will allow the general practitioner to expand their practice, providing an option of non-referral where appropriate. It will also give valuable insights for those considering neurology as a specialism.

And finally, the course will emphasise strategies to mitigate common complications associated with spinal surgery, ensuring participants are equipped to handle diverse clinical scenarios with confidence.

    Topics to be covered include:

    • Overview of canine spinal disease, with emphasis on IVDD
    • Examination techniques for diagnosing spinal disorders
    • Diagnostic modalities, including advanced imaging studies
    • Medical management options for IVDD
    • Surgical techniques for IVDD, including hemilaminectomy and ventral slot
    • The decision-making process in selecting appropriate treatment options
    • Identification and prevention of common complications associated with spinal surgery
    • Hands-on wet lab sessions for learning and practising techniques using cadaver specimens.
