  • Description

This course offers a practical, case‑-based approach to managing cats and dogs involved in blunt vehicle trauma, and shows how these techniques can be applied across many emergency presentations. We’ll begin with triage and resuscitation before moving on to targeted treatment of major body‑system injuries. The day is designed to build confidence in structured decision‑making when you’re under the pressure of an emergency case.

    Topics to be covered include:

    • Trauma triage systems, including primary and secondary surveys, point of care blood work and ultrasound
    • Initial resuscitation (including use of blood products) and analgesia and anaesthetic protocols
    • Thoracic trauma, including pulmonary contusions and pneumothorax
    • ‎Abdominal trauma, including assessment of different possible abdominal effusions and their unique management
    • Head trauma, including traumatic brain injury, ocular injuries and jaw fractures
    • Management of spinal cord injuries, including tail pull injuries
    • ‘Red flags’ when should referral be considered and how best to stabilise the patient prior to transfer.
